| Bourbon county was formed in
1786. It is located in the Inner Bluegrass region of the state. The
elevation in the county ranges from 715 to 1050 feet above sea level. In
1990 the county population was 19,236 in a land area of 291 square
miles, an average of 66.1 people per square mile. The county seat is
Paris.
Settlement began near the Hopewell Spring
with Joseph Houston's station in 1775. The town was chartered as
Hopewell, Virginia in 1789 and renamed Paris the next year to honor the
French assistance during the revolution. Paris is the seat of Bourbon
County and is located near the center of the county on Stoner Creek. It
is served by US 68, US 27, and US 460. The first post office opened as
Bourbonton in 1794 and was renamed Paris by 1815. The town and post
office were also sometimes referred to as Bourbontown and Bourbon Court
House. The population in 1990 was 8,730.
