Hawesville

Hancock County is located along the Ohio River at the edge of Kentucky's Western Coal Region. In 1990, Hawesville, the county seat, had 1,046 persons and Lewisport, located ten miles northwest Hawesville, had a population of 1,778. Hancock County, with a land area of 189 square miles, had a 1990 population of 7,864. The community's highly rated school system, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, provides public education to the county. One non-public school also operates in Hancock County. Six institutions of higher learning are located within 65 miles of Hawesville. Vocational training is available at the Daviess County State Vocational-Technical School and the Owensboro Vocational-Technical School, both 25 miles southwest of Hawesville; the Breckinridge County Area Vocational Education Center, 26 miles southeast of Hawesville; and at the Tell City IV Tech lnstructional Center, 5 miles north of Hawesville. Approximately 2, 500 workers are employed by a well-diversified industrial community made up of aluminum, wood, metal coating, and tile.
